Resolution apologises for ‘enduring harm’ caused by bombing of house occupied by members of black liberation group

Philadelphia’s governing council has formally apologised for one of the worst atrocities in the long history of racial strife in the city – the aerial bombing on 13 May 1985 of a house occupied by members of the black liberation group Move that left 11 people dead, including five children.

The networks have made their calls, world leaders have begun paying their respects, and even Fox News and Rupert Murdoch’s other media outlets appear to have given up the ghost on a second term for Donald Trump. But in a video posted on Facebook on 7 November and viewed more than 16.5m times since, NewsMax host and former Trump administration official Carl Higbie spends three minutes spewing a laundry list of false and debunked claims casting doubt on the outcome of the presidential election.

“I believe it’s time to hold the line,” said Higbie, who resigned from his government post over an extensive track record of racist, homophobic and bigoted remarks, to the Trump faithful. “I’m highly skeptical and you should be too.”

Hurricane and storm surge warnings have been declared for the keys with the storm expected to hit Sunday night or early Monday

A strengthening Tropical storm Eta sliced across Cuba on Sunday and was aimed at the tip of Florida, where officials braced for a storm that could hit at hurricane force after leaving scores dead and over 100 missing in Mexico and Central America.

The US National Hurricane Center in Miami declared hurricane and storm surge warnings for the keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas, including Florida Bay, with the storm expected to reach that area by Sunday night or early Monday.

British and Irish stables enjoyed one of their best ever days at the Breeders’ Cup meeting on Saturday as Aidan O’Brien sent out an unprecedented 1-2-3 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile after earlier wins for Kevin Ryan’s Glass Slippers and James Fanshawe’s Audarya in the Turf Sprint and Filly & Mare Turf respectively. A clean sweep of the day’s events on grass was complete when Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa landed the Turf.

Then Authentic, the Kentucky Derby winner, brought down the curtain on the meeting with an authoritative success in the Classic under a copybook frontrunning ride by John Velazquez. The 4-1 chance was Bob Baffert’s fourth winner of the race in the last seven years.

Two men, who lacked permits to carry their weapons in Pennsylvania, traveled from Virginia in Hummer with QAnon sticker

Two men armed with handguns were arrested on Thursday near the convention center in Philadelphia where the continuing vote count could decide the presidential election, police said.

The men, ages 42 and 61, traveled to the city from the Virginia Beach, Virginia, area in a Hummer and did not have permits to carry the weapons in Pennsylvania, police said. The Hummer was adorned with an American flag and a window sticker for the antisemitic, pro-Trump conspiracy theory QAnon.

An international observer mission has reported that the US elections have been “tarnished” by legal uncertainty and Donald Trump’s “unprecedented attempts to undermine public trust”.

A preliminary report by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) pointed to systemic weaknesses in US elections, as well as the stress imposed by the coronavirus pandemic and Trump’s calls for an end to vote counting in certain states based on false claims of fraud.

A political analysis report says that Democrats expect to gain between 10 and 15 seats in the 435-member House

Democrats are expected to expand their majority in the House of Representatives by winning several election races on Tuesday night, an expansion that would build on Democrats’ impressive wins in the 2018 midterm elections, when they gained 41 House seats.

The Cook Political Report, which provides non-partisan election and political analysis, predicted on Monday that Democrats will gain between 10 and 15 seats in the House, which has 435 members. “A combination of President Trump’s unpopularity in the suburbs, a fundraising disadvantage, and 32 open seats for the GOP to defend (to Democrats’ dozen) has weighed down Republicans’ prospects,” said David Wasserman, of Cook Political Report.
